Dear Ms. Adamo:

Re:       Application to Amend Zoning By-law Application No. 11 264854 NNY 26 OZ

We are writing on behalf of Leaside Unite (“LU”), a citizens group concerned about this proposed development on Laird and the negative impact it will have on Leaside. We have joined forces with the Leaside Property Owners Association (LPOA) to oppose this development as proposed. Kindly distribute this letter to all Councillors on North York Community Council in advance of the February 26, 2013 NYCC meeting.

We understand that the above Application will be considered and possibly voted on during the NYCC meeting scheduled for February 26, 2013. On behalf of LU and LPOA, we respectfully request that any decision with respect to the Application be deferred until the April 9, 2013 meeting. We request this deferral for the following reasons:

  • LU and LPOA are community organizations staffed by volunteers, and there is simply insufficient time to consider the Staff Report and appendices which were just published on February 14, 2013.
  •  The Staff Report does not include a cumulative impact traffic study. Time is required to determine if such a study needs to be commissioned.
  • The Staff Report is the first report issued in years where the proposed development has not been scaled back at all. There is a lot at stake for the community. LU and LPOA need time to consult with the community, and possibly meet with the Developer to discuss settlement.
  • There is no urgency for NYCC to make a decision immediately. The existing Smart Centre Development by the same Developer — that is immediately south of the proposed development — has yet to be completed.

At the February 26 meeting, we will be presenting our petition of approximately 1,200 signatures opposing the development in its current form.

Yours sincerely,

Graham Shirley (LU and LPOA)

Carol Burtin Fripp (LPOA)
